On April 27, Jewish students came together at the University of North Texas Student Union for Active Shooter Preparedness Training. The training was hosted by the UNT Hillel in partnership with JSA and the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas. The Dallas Community Security Director, Bill Humphrey, led the training session.
Student organizer and UNT student Sadie Ostrowicki spoke regarding the training:
"The Jewish people are constantly told that we are under threat. Time and time again, we a reminded this through stories, news articles and personal experiences. However, there are few opportunities to give Jews the resources we need to fight back, and learn the actions we must take against hate crimes. JSA filled that gap by educating minority students about not only the fears that they face, but the strength they hold. The active shooting training allows Jews to be more proud in their Judaism, because it prepares them on how to defend themselves safely and realistically. My biggest takeaway was the prevalence of active shootings in vulnerable communities, and the unpreparedness most people are in those situations. No one expects to be a victim of an active shooter, making them a more vulnerable target."
